Ashkelon, the City Promised by God
Additionally, the prophet Zephaniah, writing in the sorrowful days before the captivity of Judah and looking toward the future, saw the restoration of Judah and the Jewish people inhabiting the desolate ruins of Ashkelon.
“That land will belong to the remnant of the house of Judah; there they will find pasture. In the evening they will lie down in the houses of Ashkelon. The Lord their God will care for them; He will restore their fortunes.” Zephaniah 2:7
Under Enemy Fire
Ashkelon is located less than 20 kilometers from the Gaza Strip, an area controlled by Hamas, an Islamist terrorist organization responsible for ongoing attacks against Israel, including rocket fire targeting civilian areas and the construction of cross-border tunnels intended for infiltration and acts of terror.
Due to its proximity, the city of Ashkelon is on the front line and has been one of the cities most heavily impacted by rocket attacks, especially since the events of October 7.
When incoming rockets are detected, warning sirens sound throughout the city, giving residents approximately 30 to 60 seconds to seek shelter in bomb-safe rooms or public shelters before impact.
At the same time, Israel’s missile defense system is activated, launching interceptors to neutralize incoming rockets mid-air. While highly effective, interceptions are not always successful.
This ongoing reality creates a constant atmosphere of insecurity, significantly affecting the daily lives of Ashkelon’s residents and contributing to high levels of fear, anxiety, and stress.
